Unlike Arthur, Orm lived among Atlantis royalty since he was born, and saw Arthur as a largely unintelligent brute. Orm was an interesting opponent for Arthur because he was very different from his half-human brother. Black Manta's more personal tale of revenge was deeply emotional, and became one of Aquaman's strongest narratives.īlack Manta's unique depiction set him apart from Aquaman's Atlantean villain. ![]() That being said, his motivation - the death of a beloved family member - benefited from the smaller-scope storytelling. The subplot of David's quest wasn't a huge story compared to the film's other overarching plotlines. David swore to kill Aquaman and avenge his father's death. However, Aquaman arrived to save the sailors, and David's father died as an indirect result of Aquaman's intervention. David Kane and his father were pirate mercenaries who attempted to hijack a military submarine. However, even though Orm was a memorably sinister antagonist, another villain stole the spotlight from him.īlack Manta became an even more compelling antagonist for Aquaman, thanks to his sympathetic backstory. He sought to subjugate the underwater Atlantean kingdoms and declare war on the humans' surface world. Orm was a truly threatening villain - not only because of his shared bloodline with Arthur, but also due to his ambitious goals. The majority of the 2018 Aquaman film's plot focused on Orm Marius, Arthur Curry's half-brother, as the aquatic hero's primary adversary. The first Aquaman film found unexpected narrative strength in its secondary antagonist. King Orm Was Good - But Black Manta Was an Even Better VillainĬatwoman Is Great - But It's Another Woman's Turn To Shine in James Gunn's DCU Although Manta will return as the main antagonist in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, his updated role may undermine the original appeal of his character. Yet Arthur's journey also brought him into conflict with Black Manta, who acted as one of Orm's mercenary allies. Arthur fought against his evil brother, Orm Marius, to prevent Atlantis' invasion of the surface world. The first Aquaman film focused on the stories of Arthur Curry and David Kane, also known as Aquaman and Black Manta respectively. That being said, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom may face a serious dilemma with its Black Manta villain. The DCEU's fresh take on Aquaman was so critically and commercially successful that it spawned a sequel. James Wan's Aquaman film thus broke the franchise mold by celebrating the adventurous spirit of its titular hero. But as a result, audiences and comic book fans critically panned the DCEU's films for being unable to capture the optimism of DC's characters. The DCEU boldly transformed iconic DC characters, like Superman and Batman, into darker and edgier versions of their comic book counterparts. The film was a notable bright spot for the DC Extended Universe, a franchise that produced a motley of flawed superhero films ever since its 2013 inception. The film solved the DCEU's multi-villain narrative problem by weaving Black Manta's motivations into Aquaman's character arc.īlack Manta's main villain role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom might overcomplicate his goals for the sake of plot.Īquaman proved that Black Manta didn't need to be a power-hungry character to be a good antagonist. ![]() Aquaman showcased Black Manta as a compelling secondary villain with a sympathetic backstory, providing one of the movie's strongest narratives. ![]()
